A series of visits to Poland leads me to try and learn the language. Nervously, I leave behind my mother tongue and embrace the idioms and turns of phrase that I hear around me. But my experience throws up opportunities as well as problems, including the feeling that my new language provides me with a mask behind which to masquerade as a new and more exciting self.
